Beast of a Feast

The Carnivore is the ultimate 'Beast of a Feast'  A variety of meats including ostrich, crocodile and camel, are roasted over charcoal and carved at your table. Delicious side dishes and an exceptional array of sauces complement this fixed price feast that also includes soup,a selection of desserts and Kenyan coffee. Set in attractive tropical gardens, the service and the décor are outstanding.

The Carnivore opened its doors in September 1980 to instant success. The food, service and atmosphere were strikingly different from anything in Kenya and has since played host to over 2 million customers from across the globe including numerous celebrities. In fact the Carnivore visitors book read like a global who is who!

The atmosphere combines the rustic feel of a rural setting and a medieval banquet hall. Another famous feature to set the tone of the Carnivore experience is the house cocktail The 'Dawa' (magic potion in Swahili). It is based on a famous Brazilian drink, and was introduced to Kenyans at The Carnivore. It is brought to you on a portable tray by the medicine man fittingly named Dr. Dawa.

Since 1980

Whole joints of meat - leg of lamb and pork, ostrich, rump of beef, sirloin, rack of lamb, spare ribs, sausages, chicken wings, skewered kidneys, even crocodile - are roasted on traditional Maasai swords over a huge, charcoal pit that dominates the entrance of the restaurant.

The Carnivore doesn’t conform to the familiar restaurant traditions. First, the soup of the day, along with a plate of home baked brown bread and butter are served, then a sizzling cast-iron plate is placed in front of each guest as an army of carvers move table to table, swords laden with prime meats carving juicy cuts onto the hot plates. Accompanying the meat feast is a wide selection of salads and vegetable side dishes, as well as a variety of sauces stacked onto a double storey revolving tray at the center of the table.

The feeding frenzy doesn’t stop until defeat is declared by the over-fed guests who signal that enough is enough by lowering the white paper flag perched atop the central tray. This is followed by dessert and coffee. The full meal including a soup course is at a set price. A vegetarian menu is also offered. The atmosphere combines the rustic feel of a rural environment with that of a medieval banqueting hall. This was accomplished by the use of  rough-hewn beams and local woods. Another famous feature to set the tone of the Carnivore experience is the house cocktail The 'Dawa' (medicine or magic potion in Swahili)- based on a famous Brazilian drink. It is delivered on a portable tray by the medicine man fittingly named Dr. Dawa.

Surprise that special someone with a delicious lunch or dinner at a restaurant of your choice

  • Carnivore - The dinner was well arranged, all sort or roasted meat from the wildlife, especially the Crocodile was tasty as well as Ostrich. A lot dancing and appreciation from the carnivore restaurant. Best place to have dinner experience after or before the safari.

  • Carnivore - Second visit here, love the service, love the food, honestly I do feel that it is quite good value for money. The soup was great, meat selection was fantastic and definitely can eat until you are full they will keep coming. The salads looked amazing, myself personally I did not eat, as I don't eat salads in Africa but husband does and said it was great. My only let down was dessert I felt quite average, I had some cake/biscuit chocolate chip dish, it was very dry.
